Recently lawmakers gathered to ask the city to take measures to improve the quality of life of neighborhood residents and protect the safety of helicopter users. There was a focus on the idea of reducing, if not doing away with permanently, tourist helicopter traffic and assessing the various risks involved in keeping the fuel stored at the heliport downtown. Serious concerns about safety have been raised by residents concerned by too frequent helicopter flights rattling neighborhoods. Last summer there was a deadly crash above the Hudson River which only saw minor improvements taken to prevent a second incident.
In August 2009 a small plane collided with a sightseeing helicopter carrying five tourists over the Hudson River and forcing people on the New Jersey waterfront to run and take cover. A helicopter pilot on the ground at the Liberty Tours heliport, which owned the ill-fated helicopter, tried to radio an alert to the pilots when they saw the plane approaching the helicopter. The warning wasn’t heard or didn’t happen in time to prevent tragedy.
