Chicago is one of the major US cities and it is also one with an extremely interesting and sometimes controversial history. It is famous for some of the organized crime elements and personalities that are a part of its history and this is something that continually captivates people who visit the city. There are even tours that guide people through some of the main mafia locations and narrate some of the famous and notorious mob stories. And while this has been a part of Chicago’s heritage, there are other more positive aspects of the city’s culture that continue to be extremely important to the residents and a point of interest and respect to the tourists.

Some of the guests who stay in one of the boutique hotels Chicago USA will want to tour some of the historic mafia locations, though most of them will visit at least one blues club while they are in town. Chicago is known for having some of the best blues and jazz clubs in the nation and the great musicians are always attracted to playing in this city. From Willie Dixon’s Blues to the House of Blues and Harlem Avenue Lounge, the sounds of blues sift out into the Chicago streets well into the night.

Another significant aspect of Chicago’s culture is the theatre scene. It is one of the major theatre cities in this country and with companies like Steppenwolf, Second City and the Looking Glass Theatre, its reputation for cutting edge as well as high quality standard theatrical canon productions remains strong. The community of Chicago is extremely supportive of the theatre scene, which is one of the fundamental reasons for its continued thriving and growth. And many of the people who visit the city every year include at least one performance in their agenda. And some of those who do may also be interested in touring a mafia haunt while they are in town.

One of the functions of the research that goes into developing drug addiction treatment facilities is to categorize and study the biological effects of specific drugs that are commonly abused. There are widely recognized categories for substances and these fall into legal prescription drugs and illegal street drugs. And while there is an obvious social distinction in orientation to the nature of the addict that uses each of these categories, researchers are discovering a remarkable similarity in the effects and consequences they have on users. One thing, however, remains clearly distinct. Prescription drugs are controlled and their content is regulated, and while users may believe that their street drug is consistent, there is nothing to guarantee that it is, how it is made, or what all it contains. And this is one of the non negotiable dangerous aspects of street drug addiction, though it is not intended to encourage prescription drug abuse. Some of the standard street drugs that lead to addiction are methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine and others like them.

After that basic and more broad categorization occurs there are further levels of chemical addiction distinction labeling. The prescription drugs are generally categorized according to whether they are narcotic in orientation and intended to provide pain relief, or if they are psychotropic and mood enhancing drugs. Some of the common prescribed pain relief medicines include Tylenol with codeine, Oxycodone and Percocet as well as their generics. There are many others, these are just a few of the commonly prescribed options.

Other prescribed medications that are commonly abused and can lead to addiction are of the psychotropic variety. This includes the family of drugs known as benzodiazepines . Some of the more recognized and widely used drugs in this family include Valium, Xanax and Ativan, which are the trademark names and there are generics of these drugs available. They all have a high chance for abuse and addiction and people who have a history of substance abuse and addictive behaviors should be very careful before starting to use them or even avoid them all together. This is a standard topic of use for quality doctors and prescription providers. This is a general description of the types of drugs that are commonly abused and can lead to addiction and they are a fundamental aspect of approaches to treatment in drug rehab centers .

London has Teen Angst

On June 24, 2010, in Travel, by laura

For anyone who’s ever wondered about the transcultural potential of teen angst, they would certainly need to talk to Sara Bynoe . Although it would be a stretch to say that she’s made a career out of it, she has made it part of a long career of very interesting pieces of projects. All together, they create an image of what might be a great comic talent lurking in the world. Based in Canada, she travels all over the world, with some very exciting projects, and all of them are unusual.

Some are plays, some are projects, and all of them feel sort of like what the most incredibly talented people might do after the rave is over. It’s not pretentious enough to be termed post-post-melancholic, or even hyper-ironic, but it does have traces of the smartest art that is still able to maintain its comedic edges.

One of the most eye and ear-catching of her projects is a poetry review called Teen Angst . It’s a pretty brilliant little idea, and one with lots of room for wild and radical collaborations from everyone who was ever young and wearing too many black clothes. When it came to London last year, it was a moment where cultures across oceans could come together and commiserate on how bad love can be.

This city is, of course, no stranger to the sentiment. Even though it’s got hundreds of years on North America in terms of a history of people speaking English, the sounds are still very much the same. There are some differences, and it might come down to the same differences between their versions of English that keep some people confused, and some people charmed. For anyone who’s ever spent too much time in a hotel, London is a great place to be any time. And when it comes to teen angst, one could stay in and ruminate over lost love, or hit the streets and do the same, because misery loves company, and it’s even better when it starts to turn funny.

Dayton and Father Guido

On June 17, 2010, in Travel, by laura

There might be something in the water, and if it makes its way from Lorain to Dayton, that would be a lucky thing. The way it worked for Don Novello, that particular trek lead to a very interesting career. But, then, again, Novello is a very interesting man, and always has been. He had a short stint as a writer of advertising copy, but other than that, interesting projects follow him, and interesting projects come directly from his connection to the muse, and his muse is strange and wonderful.

The University of Dayton does have some interesting and exceptional alumni, and it’s always attracted a very bright and innovative student population. Civic-mindedness coupled with a little midwestern wariness, along with some interesting connections to a genius stone, these are the qualities that characterize any student population here, at any given time. It makes for a kind of atmosphere that’s welcome to travelers, and when looking for a hotel, Dayton can offer a whole lot more than just a place to shut your eyes for awhile.

Don Novello seems to be one whose eyes are pretty brightly lit up most of the time, and wide open for enough of the day to make some interesting work that no one else on earth could have conceived. He had a writing gig early on with the Smothers Brothers, and eventually caught the eye of David Steinberg. Like most of us, Steinberg couldn’t belive what he was seeing.

He also collected a book of letters that he wrote under the name Lazlo Toth, pretending to be an angry and dim man who liked to complain about everything. In exchange for his rants, he was mailed a lot of fantastic things: free m&ms;, signed portraits, and lots of apologies from baffled corporations. That got him noticed by Lorne Michaels, who signed him on at SNL and positioned him for the introduction of Father Guido Sarducci to the world. The rest, they say, is history, and the history includes producer of SCTV, a scene in Godfather III, and who knows what else will come next.

Another yearbook like The Blade would do wonders for those who find sheep as funny as he does, but no one else could play it like him.

Few people understand legalese or anything really having to do with law. People know that there are a few things that absolutely should not be done. Don’t steal, don’t hit people, don’t drink and drive and for the most part you should be alright. Realistically, it is a little more complicated than that. When people need a Salt Lake City lawyer , it turns out that there are a number of different types. There are criminal lawyers and civil lawyers and family lawyers. Even within criminal law there are a number of different types of lawyers.

Some law offices will have lawyers that specialize in one thing and will have a few lawyers who are good at dealing with only that kind of law. When looking into these types of law offices you should make sure that you are hiring them for a job that falls within their specialty. Although they may seem similar you do not want to hire a DUI lawyer to help you when you have been caught with a large stash of illegal drugs. You will really not want to hire them for a case that is completely different such as if you have been charged with assault and battery. There are lawyers who specialize in this kind of case and will have a much higher chance of being able to get you out of the charges placed against you.

There are also law offices that will not specialize in any one type of case, but instead will have a number of lawyers who are each very good at specific types of cases. A law firm will try to make a point of putting the right lawyer with the right case but if you ask you can sometimes get a different one within the same firm.

In both cases check out your individual lawyer’s win loss history , not the firm as a whole. See how many of the wins have happened while they have been with their current firm. While it is important that they are a good lawyer it is also important to know that the firm is supporting them and therefore you 100%.

Beautiful California Coast Cities

On June 13, 2010, in Travel, by laura

The state of California is well known across the world for many reasons. It has one of the most beautiful coastlines in the country and due to its incredible length, the coastline is also extremely diverse. From the warm sunny beaches in southern California that are frequently associated with San Diego, to the popular entertainment and fascinating beaches of LA all the way to the cool foggy Bay of San Francisco and beyond, the coastline and beaches are beautiful and diverse and span the western edge of the state. There are also some incredible five star hotels in California and many of them are located in the coastal cities.

San Diego is the most southern of the main costal cities in California. It is also known for having some of the most beautiful beaches in the state and its even mild climate gives it paradise imagery for many people. There are plenty of opportunities for great water sports including scuba diving and surfing. A little further up the coast lies Los Angeles, and the surrounding cities such as Long Beach and Santa Monica. Meanwhile the popular beaches such as Venice Beach and the section known as Muscle Beach continues to attract numerous tourists every year.

Of course the beautiful city of San Francisco is the furthest north of these three main cities, and it is considerably further up the coast. The entire climate and atmosphere is strikingly different from the southern cities. And the summers here are surprisingly chilly to first timers who also are amazed at the almost daily fog covering that greats them in morning. The bay is highlighted by the Golden Gate Bridge and also the Bay Bridge , which are well known landmarks. Of course the city skyline is another famous aspect of this incredible city. And while the geography, climate and incredible beaches of these fabulous coastline California cities is amazing, it just begins to orient one to the nature of cities and doesn’t begin to cover the cultural heritage and incredible aspects of any of them.

Remarkable Southwestern Salespeople

On June 9, 2010, in Business, by laura

There are a number of things that are remarkable about Southwestern Company salespeople that other door to door salespeople could learn from. Take customer service for example. These summer salespeople are out in the sun all day, walking around, usually not actually going inside people’s houses to get out of the hear for a while and yet they are still happy to serve. That is the real key: in sales school they are taught that the best salespeople are happy to serve. As a salesperson you are in service to your many customers. You work for them, look for the best deals for them. This service is showing them a product that will help them out, improve their life, make things easier in some way, but it is also in the way that the customer is treated.

A Southwestern salesperson ‘s service may be sometimes to stand outside the house with a young woman and talk to her about what good can come from the product, or it can be to go away until the husband has returned. Some men would not be comfortable with a man talking to his wife while he is at work, and some women may not be comfortable talking to a man while the kids are inside unattended without her. In the summer time the kids will be home a lot more, and many women will feel more uncomfortable opening the door to strangers. Being aware of these sorts of concerns shows a resident that you are serious about their safety, their comfort and that you are legitimate in your services.

It is going to be hot outside and it will be discouraging for many sales people who are walking around in the heat. Many people will not be at home but rather at a local swimming pool, or out and about doing their favorite summer activities. Others will simply cut off a salesperson, close the door in their face, or otherwise reject them. This can be taxing on their mental condition and can make many salespeople unhappy. No matter what a salesperson needs a good attitude to make the sale though. Southwestern Company salespeople are taught to be upbeat and happy to be working at all, even under the hottest summer suns in places like Phoenix .

Miami’s New Hot Spot is on Eigtht Street

On June 7, 2010, in Business, by laura

Miami is a hot-spot for new restaurants, plus a few iconic favorites, but it’s on Eighth Street, otherwise known as East Little Havana or Calle Ocho, that seems to be making foodies come in droves. Eighth Street was once a non-descript street with the usual laundromats, dollar stores and banks, but now it’s turning into a hot urban hang-out for young residents and for the late night partiers that spill over from Brickell. Any out-of-towner or foreign tourist will be pleasantly surprised with the delicious cuisine of 2 chic restaurants, which are all within walking distance from any nice hotel Miami USA offers its millions of visitors each year.

La Moon , located on 144 SW Eighth Street, serving Cuban entrees, including a Colombian hot dog, deep fried with bacon, aioli, potato sticks, mustard and mounds of other condiments, which are taking center stage in an up-scale setting. The prices are very low for the quality food you get, for example: appetizers run from $1.25 to $8.50, entrees $8.55 to $13.95; the hot dogs and burgers are from $4.35 to $6.50. The menu is eclectic and remarkable from smoked Colombian sausage to fresh arepas and pork bellies. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. La Moon is underneath the metro rail and is the quintessential of a mom-and-pops.

Las Tapas de Rosa , located at 449 SW Eighth Street, another mom-and-pops, which is hidden in a small strip mall, is great place to have a restaurant on Eighth, because you don’t have to worry about parking. The outside belies the inside with its warm, buttery walls, wooden shelves lined with honey, artichoke hearts, olives and espadrilles; brick-red tablecloths and the smell of home-cooked meals. Las Tapas is Madrid-style, and once seated you’ll be treated to complimentary marinated olives and dipping bread while you peruse the display of cheeses, sausages and prepared foods in a cooler. You’ll notice Spanish standards, like seafood paella, chorizo-peppered tortillas and daily specials such as oxtail on Fridays. It’s recommended to try the sizzling dish of fried chickpeas with Spanish sausage, cured ham and vegetables, or the octopus with hot paprika and olive oil, fried potatoes in a spicy brava sauce, shrimp and garlic, garlic mushrooms and fried calamari, but remember to save room for dessert, because the torrija casera, which is a thick slice of baguette soaked French toast style in egg, milk and cinnamon, then fried and drizzled with sugar, lemon and brandy is the best dessert on Eighth Street.
