Making Your Home Green

If there is anything is this world that we can’t live without it’s the planet. It provides us with everything we need from the food that we eat to the air that we breathe. This is why it is so important that we protect and preserve our planet. Most of us are familiar with recycling glass, plastic and paper and carpooling to work as means to protect the environment, but there are many things that we can around the house that will protect the environment as well.

Turn off the lights when you’re not in the room –it’s a phrase I’m sure most of heard growing up from parents hoping to save some money on the electric bill. By limiting our use of electricity we can reduce the amount of fossil fuels that are burned as well as the number of greenhouse gases that are released into the atmosphere. You can also limit what you use by purchasing energy efficient appliances, such as dishwashers, refrigerators, and even air conditioning units. Switching to solar power, especially if you live in sunny climate, is also a great way to utilize our renewable resources, save money, and help the environment.

Another great way to be green and be good to the planet is by decorating smart. There are VOC-free paints that don’t release harmful chemicals, which are bad for you and the environment. There are also many natural options for furniture, carpets, curtains, and almost any other item that you would want to decorate with. When it comes to window blinds and shades, there are many choices that are not only natural but also help increase the energy efficiency of your windows –keeping the cool in and the heat out or vice versa. Some companies will even place the order and deliver your blinds next day so you can get them up right away.

Protecting the environment and preserving our resources is an important legacy for our generation to maintain and to pass on to future generations. And whatever place to start than at home.

Mercedes-Benz Biome

The automotive industry as it stands today might quickly become a thing of the past if Mercedes-Benz’s engineering breakthroughs come to fruition. At the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Studio unveiled what might possibly be the greenest car in the world – the revolutionary Biome. Although just a concept car, the  Biome is grown – not built – in a nursery from only two seeds. Mercedes is calling it a partnership with nature and they are not wrong; the car is practically a custom built plant on wheels.

The car is built from a material —  grown from those two seeds — which Mercedes is calling BioFibre using proprietary DNA. The exterior of the car is built with one seed, while the exterior of the car is built with the other. The growth process starts from seeds places at the center of where the Mercedes-Benz “star” is positioned on the front and back of the vehicle. Each car can also be tailored made for specific people or purposes by altering the DNA of the seeds that grow the vehicle. And unlike most (or any) car rims and car tires the Biome’s wheels are grown from four different seeds.

Benz also claims that their new BioFibre material is stronger than steel but lighter than plastic. The Biome turned heads at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show not just because of its unique design, but because it only weighed 875.5 lbs. The car was actually entered into the Auto Show’s Design Competition which was for new and safe cars that weighed 1,000lbs or less. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.), the average U.S. car weighs about 4,000 pounds.

Mercedes-Benz Biome interior

The whole car is powered (literally) by something that Mercedes is calling BioNectar4534 — an organic liquid chemical bond. BioNectar4534 is one of material that comprises BioFibre and is also stored directly in the car’s chassis and used for fuel. BioNectar4534 can be safely produced by genetically modified trees, much like the entire car is grown from genetically modified seeds. The Photosynthesis that trees undergo in turn produce BioNectar4534 instead of fruit. This way even the car’s fuel is green and trees don’t have to be harvested. In fact, if the Biome becomes a reality its possible that we could see an end to deforestation as BioNectar4534 could become a new global fuel, prompting people and corporations to plat BioNectar producing trees all over the world. However, the Biome does produce emission when running, though not the kind of emissions that people might assume; the truth is that the Biome emits Oxygen when running. That’s right. Completely harmless oxygen –something the entire planet could use more of. Unfortunately, the one thing that Mercedes didn’t cover were the specifics of this seemingly magic Oxygen producing engine. Does it use a weber carburetor or an organic battery? At this point it’s anyone’s guess.

Lastly, the Mercedes-Benz Biome even has a earth-friendly end. Instead of ending up in a scrap heap like many cars today do, the Biome can be safely composted or recycled. To be honest, the entire thing sounds like science fiction, but here’s hoping that life will be a little Stranger than Fiction.

Check out this video from the Los Angeles Auto Show about the Mercedes-Benz Biome below.

Choosing a Teenager’s First Cell Phone

On June 29, 2011, in Electronics, by laura

These days, teenagers tend to have a cell phone more often than pocket change, and kids are getting their first phones earlier each year. As a matter of fact, the average age that a child receives that first phone has dropped dramatically in the last five years alone, from nearly adulthood down to the early teen years. Choosing a teenager’s first cell phone is not a matter of walking into a major cell phone retail store and grabbing the cheapest thing you see, though.

1.      What will the phone be used for primarily? Phones are now capable of a wide variety of functions, from basic talking capabilities to surfing the Internet and downloading music. Many phones have unique functions that are brand-specific, and it will cost less to buy a phone that is geared toward what your teenager will do with it most. Otherwise, you will find yourself hit with astronomical fees.

To start, sit down with your teenager and talk about what he or she wants to do with the phone. It may mean setting some limits—with penalties for not staying within the agreed upon limitations—but this is a great way to find out what packages you may need to research more fully. Examples include text messaging, video messaging, picture messages, music or movie capabilities, Internet access, Bluetooth connection, and similar ideas.

2.      What type of agreement are you looking for? Many cell phone retailers offer one- and two-year contracts in exchange for a deep discount on the price of the phone. Choosing a phone based on the agreement tends to limit the number of phones available without extra cost, especially if you want a short contract or no contract at all. If you cancel the contract before the end of the agreement you could be forced to pay hundreds of dollars.

Let your teenager know that he or she may be responsible for the monthly costs associated with the cell phone. This teaches responsibility and most cell phone carriers charge $10 or less for the extra line if you choose a “family” package. You could use lawn care, babysitting, housework, or even good grades as a method for earning the cell phone, and if your teenager does not follow the rules the phone privileges can be revoked.

3.      How much can you reasonably afford to spend? There are dozens of unique phone styles available, each with interesting functions that appeal to the average teenager. Unfortunately, they often come with a price tag, and your first step, before you even mention a phone to your teenager, should be to figure out how much you can spend on this venture. There will be start up fees involved, from activation fee to the cost of the phone and minutes or extra features, and these will be reflected on your next bill in most cases.

Think of it this way: there is no point in telling your children options that they cannot choose. This is not fair to them! Do your homework before they know that you are considering a phone for them, and be prepared to tell them what you can afford to offer, from text messaging to picture mail and Internet access. Keep in mind that there is nothing wrong with trading one extra for another, such as giving up one reward for extra phone options. There is also nothing wrong with canceling an extra if it is not working out.

4.      Whatever you choose together, be specific about the consequences of not following the rules. For instance, many parents require that the teenager keep the cell phone on whenever they are hanging out with friends so that they can keep in contact. There are also rules about not using the phone during school hours and requirements for answering whenever Mom/Dad call. In addition to great rules like these, be very specific about what will happen for infractions.

Parents face the possibility of massive cell phone bills when teenagers do not follow the rules, so there should be consequences in case of minute overage, too many texts, excessive Internet usage, unauthorized downloads, and similar circumstances. Being forced to pay the difference can solve the problem quickly for most teens, as can turning off extra privileges and sticking to talking only. If you are unwilling to take away the phone for safety reasons, consider a phone that will only allow calls to and from specific preprogrammed phone numbers.

College life can be very stressful. All the homework, research papers, projects, as well as parties and club meetings can drain your energy. If you want to keep your grades up, bear in mind that you need to take good care of your body. One way to do so is by eating the right food to keep you fit and healthy despite your hectic schedule and the stress that comes with your various activities.

So how can college students eat towards better health and grades?

1.       Eat smart. Remember, you need to meet daily vitamin and mineral requirements to keep your body fit and healthy. In order for you to study well, you need to fuel your brain with iron and B vitamins. Iron rich foods include red meat, cereals, and spinach.  Vitamin B rich foods include whole grains, wheat germs, nuts, and eggs. Fish and soy are also good for your brain because they provide the necessary nutrients. While studying you can also eat “smart snacks” such as peanut butter and banana or baked potato with cottage cheese to keep your blood sugar levels stable.

2.       Eat regularly. Eating regular meals is good for your health. It helps keep nutrient and energy levels stable. This way, you can avoid eating unnecessary meals in between. Make sure that you don’t skip the most important meal of the day, which is breakfast. A bowl of cereal and a piece of fruit are good sources of protein, calcium, and fiber.

3.       Eat whole food items. Vitamins are okay but take note that real food items are better than any form of dietary supplements or vitamins. When you’re studying, bring some whole food items like bananas, carrot sticks, apples, or dried apricots. These food items are rich in Vitamin C, fiber, beta carotene, and other minerals.

4.       Eat lots of fruits. Instead of eating chocolates and sweets to boost your energy, why not try some fruits? Fruits such as blueberries contain powerful antioxidants and other nutrients. Take note that natural sugars found in fruits are healthier which is good for fueling the brain.

5.       Eat powerful vegetables. Darker colored vegetables contain more nutrients. Spinach, lettuce, broccoli, bell peppers, and sweet potatoes are some of the examples of powerful vegetables.

6.       Get simple recipes for healthy foods. Try to gather simple recipes for healthy foods so that during your spare time, you can prepare nutritious meals or snacks for you and your friends.

Eating right is so important.  Too many people rely on “quick fixes” for their hunger.  Think about it, a car runs on gas – that’s all.  Your body needs certain nutrients too, or it’s not going to run towards its full potential!

Looking to take a vacation this year but don’t want to feel bad about your carbon footprint? Well have no fear; there are many tips and tricks which will allow you to have a “greener” getaway.

First, you will want to choose where exactly you want to go. It might be helpful to grab a USA map or a world map to help you make your decision. Maybe there is somewhere you have always dreamed of going or maybe there is a place you absolutely love to visit. Some trips even allow you to go on a volunteer vacation, where you can spend your time volunteering for a better cause.

Packing light will allow you to enjoy the trip more because you won’t have to worry about your luggage, you can simply enjoy your time. Also, the lighter you pack the more walking you can do, and the easier it will be to navigate the city.

Depending on where you want to visit, you can drive, fly, or take a train. Any of these modes of transportation will do. If you do decide to drive, you might want to think about taking a hybrid vehicle as it will save you money on gas, but also reduce your carbon emissions. Once you get to your destination you will want to make sure you have a road atlas, that way you know where you are going. To be more eco-friendly, take public transportation, or walk around the city.

Many hotels have now become eco-friendly, and are taking measures to be more sustainable. An eco-friendly hotel will allow you to stay in pleasant accommodations and give you the ease of knowing that you are not affecting the environment. Also, when you are not in the room, make sure that you leave all the lights off, the appliances unplugged, and make sure the sinks and shower heads don’t drip. These few little things are great sustainable tips.

So if you have been putting off that vacation because you feel bad about your environmental impact, worry no more. You can have a sustainable trip while still having a great time.

Ergonomics for Your Bike

On June 23, 2011, in Health, by laura

Cycling Misconceptions

Cyclists often believe that is necessary to tolerate discomfort due to their bicycle saddle. However, this myth is usually far from the truth. An ergonomic bike seat will offer comfort and allow cyclists to go long distances without any soreness.

For new cyclists, it is common to be sore from riding since the body is adapting to the new position. Soreness that persists for more than a couple weeks is likely to be caused by an improper seat.

Many cyclists should take a moment to evaluate whether their bicycle seat is appropriate for the rider. If the seat is not ergonomic, there is an increased chance that cycling will be uncomfortable and not very pleasant. This may develop into an attitude that prevents you from getting out on the road as often.

Standard bicycle seats can also create pressure on points of the body that are highly unnecessary. Areas of the body that may be affected include:

- Prostate

- Urethra

- Pudenal arteries

- Dorsal nerves

Traditional seats can also cause cysts to develop on the tailbone from constant pressure be placed on the area. Ultimately, it is extremely important to choose an ergonomic seat that will prevent these conditions from occurring and provide a smooth, comfortable ride.

Choosing an Ergonomic Bike Seat

Picking an ergonomic bike seat has many different factors that cyclists must consider. For instance, cyclists should take into account what type of bike they have, riding style, and the terrain that is to be covered. Other factors that should be considered are:

- Saddle position

- Padding on the seat

- Width of the seat

- Suspension system

Saddle position is important since it will dictate the how satisfied cyclists will be on the bike. If cyclists want to ride for leisure, a saddle that is wider may be preferred. For speed cycling, thinner saddles are often recommended for aerodynamic purposes.

Padding on a seat must also be considered for riding. For leisure rides, it is suggested that cyclists use a saddle that has extra padding. For cyclists who plan on longer rides, extra padding is not ideal.

Width of the seat is another issue that must be tackled. The width of seat will change between cyclists. Some cyclists will be more comfortable on a bike that has wide seat, while others will choose a thinner seat. It is solely a matter of preference and will vary amongst riders.

Suspension systems on seats are also important to a rider’s comfort. Most ergonomic seats will have a suspension system that makes a ride smoother and more comfortable on rougher terrains. These type of seats are excellent for riders who go off-road or for cyclists who choose to mountain bike.

Ergonomic Seat Cutouts

Another innovation is the cycling world is the use of a cutout that can help relieve pressure on sensitive areas of the rider’s body. These seats have a cutout on top of the seat that is well-known to prevent numbness and pain that may be associated with long bike rides.

A cyclist’s bike seat one of the more important features on a bike and should be evaluated before purchasing. There are a variety of seats that are sure to fit any rider’s needs. Furthermore, these seats are created to protect a rider and ensure a comfortable riding experience.
