The Bloom Box Energy Cell

It might not be as eco-friendly as an array of solar panels but Bloom Energy’s new Bloom Box is certainly a step in the right direction. The Bloom Box or Bloom Server is essentially a fully contained personal fuel cell for commercial properties. The Bloom Servers are solid oxide fuel cells, which convert gas (either natural or bio-gas) into electricity. Bloom’s Solid Oxide Fuel Cells convert gas into electricity by taking in fuel (gas) and air into the cell wherein steam mixes with the fuel to create a “reformed fuel” that later combines with oxygen ions to create electricity. The entire process is known as an electro-chemical reaction and produces  electricity, heat, water, and a negligible amount of carbon dioxide.

To get started the Bloom Energy Servers only need 120 gallons of municipal water  and a small steady supply of natural or bio-gas. Furthermore, the Bloom Fuel Cells don’t even use any precious metals or harsh chemicals unlike other traditional fuel cells. Bloom Fuel Cells become even more environmentally friendly when you consider that they can run on biogas, which  is formed from the biological decomposition of organic material. Biogas is environmentally friendly and shares many of the properties of normal natural gas but the main difference is that biogas is  a renewable energy. According to Bloom Energy, two Bloom Boxes generate enough energy to power a house, while one Bloom Server generates 100 kilowatts of electricity–enough to power 100 average homes. Although the  $700,000 plus price for the Bloom Fuel Cells has prevented widespread adoption among consumers and businesses, Bloom Energy is working hard to reduce the cost of each fuel cell to  a more affordable price so that one day every house might have a Bloom Box. Currently, Bloom Energy’s is supplying some pretty big corporation with their revolutionary fuel cells include Google, eBay, Coca Cola, Staples and Walmart.

If you think you’re saving the environment by mowing your lawn with an electric mower then think again, because Google’s found a way to be even more eco-friendly. Google’s newest landscapers don’t have any new tricks or fancy equipment to reduce their carbon footprint either unless you count a healthy appetite for flora. Instead of the usual landscapers, the search giant has instead opted to rent goats to maintain the lawn at their Mountain View headquarters. To rent the goats, Google turn turned to the company California Grazing, who rents herds of goats and sheep that are more than happy to just graze all day. Not only does employing goats and sheep to graze on your property reduce the emission that would be otherwise produced by using gas mowers, the herds also help restore plant species and fertilize the land at the same time. Additionally, the goats are also quite fond of “hot fuel” plants or plants that easily lead to brush fires and other pest plants like Star Thistle and Poison Oak. Along with goats and sheep California Grazing also rents trained USBCHA champion Border Collies to help with shepherding your new landscapers. The last time Google rented a herd, about 200 goats, they grazed on the large Mountain View campus for about a week and were managed by only one herder and a Border Collie named Jen. One of the best things about California Grazing is that their herds are available to rent at any time of the year as well. California Grazing claims that if you have a large plot of land that renting a herd from them will cost you about the same amount as moving it and Google seems to agree. Renting a herd might not save you much money but saving the environment sure doesn’t hurt anything either.

Shell Hydrogen Station

Shell Oil Company opened up a hydrogen fuel station in Torrance, California today, but this fuel station is a bit different. This particular station in Torrance is unique because it is the first hydrogen fueling station to be directly connected to a pipeline which is directly served by Air Products, a leading suppler in hydrogen fuel. Electric cars have been the frontrunner for green vehicles, and have all but eclipsed other existing alternative fuel vehicles like hydrogen fuel cell cars.  Like electric cars, hydrogen fuel cell cars have no environmentally harmful by products so they have little day to day impact on the world. In addition to electric cars, many automobile manufacturers also produce hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and hopefully with companies like Shell helping to expand the availability of hydrogen fuel cell stations more car manufactures and consumers will take notice.

Custom Blinds Can Be Affordable

On April 29, 2011, in Home, by laura

Everyone has a home improvement horror story. It’s usually about a project that they attempted to do themselves but should have left to the professionals. They probably wanted to save money and ended having to hire someone else to do it anyway. If only they had spent some time hunting down discounts. For example, anyone who wants to get custom window treatments for their home just needs to do some research to find coupons for blinds that will cut the cost of the project.

There are some basic steps for ordering custom blinds. First homeowners need to decide on the materials, colors, and type of blinds they want. Then they get estimates from blinds companies who will take exact measurements of the windows . Lastly, they choose a company and wait for their new blinds to be installed. It’s all fairly straightforward.

Bargain hunters know that a very important step was skipped in the above description. Before they start contacting blind installers in their town, they will head to the internet to track down sales, coupon codes, and other bargains. They may be able to find a discount on a specific manufacturer or locate codes for their local dealer, like the many Next Day Blinds coupons that are online. Once they are armed with coupons, and codes, then it is time to talk with those companies that will honor the discounts.

Tires Can Save Gas

On April 25, 2011, in Money, by laura

The experts were right. Gas has risen to more than $4.00 a gallon in some parts of the US. The rest of the country can expect that they, too, will be seeing prices that high in the near future. The second great age of the gas guzzling car is officially over.

In addition to looking at hybrid and all electric cars, drivers are also trying to find ways to squeeze the best possible gas mileage out of their existing vehicle. Many are realizing that their tires are a very important part of this equation.

Car tires, as the point of contact with the road, are extremely important to the efficient operation of the vehicle. Tires that are the right size for the vehicle and that are properly inflated and balanced at all times are going to have a significant impact on gas mileage. This applies to discount wheels as well as premium tires. In fact, paying a fortune for high performance tires and then not keeping them in good working condition can actually be more detrimental than buying cheaper tires and doing proper monitoring and maintenance.

In addition to checking the tire pressure at least once a week and making sure they are properly inflated, drivers need to have the tires balanced and rotated on a regular schedule if they want better fuel efficiency . They may also want to consider switching to tires inflated with nitrogen instead of regular air, as there are several promising studies that indicate this can provide an additional bump in gas mileage.

5 Ways To Shed Weight Before Summertime

On April 22, 2011, in Health, by laura

Being overweight may be the one universal condition shared by a vast majority of adults. Definitions for what is obese, overweight, or simply uncomfortable vary, and usually matter less than knowing one needs to let some pounds fall by the wayside.

If getting into new clothes and looking good this summer is an important goal, one should seriously consider implementing the following weight loss techniques. Nothing on this list is radical like surgeries or starvation diets. Quite the opposite, in fact. Once the habit is made, it is not inconceivable that the weight will come off, stay off, and never return.

A Handful Of Real Weight Loss Techniques That Work

  1. Consume Fewer Calories: Or simply put, eat less. Perhaps easier said than done, certainly. Scientific studies have shown that by reducing caloric intake, subjects (lab mice in this case) seemed to live as much as 50% longer. Perhaps the human body’s response won’t correlate accordingly, it is certain that most people ingest many more calories than their body actually requires.
  2. Slow Down: On the amount of time you take to eat your food. Most eaters stomachs seem not to be linked to their eyes and brains in real time. The eyes are bigger than the stomach, etc. When people eat fast it takes their bodies much longer to inform their mind that their hunger has been satiated. The challenge with this is that most will continue to consume calories far past the point of feeling full. Thus comes the sensation of being stuffed. This condition of course is harmful for a number of reasons (see the previous item) one of which the enormous stress digestion puts on the body.
  3. Eat Early: As previously stated, the body requires massive amounts of energy to digest its food. When food is consumed later in the evening and into the night, many of the body’s resources are allocated to dealing with the influx of calories. Instead of being able to focus on rebuilding and repairing itself from the days metabolic consequences, digestion becomes job one. And resource drain number one. Eating earlier gives one the chance to digest food while conscious and rebuild the body when asleep.
  4. Eat More Often: Seem counter intuitive? Not at all. Studies have shown that while reducing the caloric amount in ones diet is beneficial, it is also desirable to spread out when those calories are introduced into the body. Instead of two or three larger meals, try consuming smaller meals five or six times throughout the day. Of course, only eating when one is hungry and stopping when one is full should rule over eating small meals because one should eat more smaller meals.
  5. Drink More: Water that is. While studies show that some forms and amounts of alcohol can be beneficial to ones overall health, the calorie levels of most beer, liquor, and wine can make the benefits hard to balance with the potential weight gain. Water on the other hand has so many beneficial effects on the body, ingesting it cannot be overlooked. Though it is possible to over indulge in water consumption, for the most part keeping cool, clean water nearby and drinking some regularly throughout the day will work wonders. The human body is made up of at least 75% water. Most of the organs and systems in the body require certain levels of hydration in order to function properly. Drink enough water and the kidneys operate better. Properly hydrated livers allow for fat extraction from the blood. Water is proven to help the body lose fat. Plus, regular water consumption has been show to reduce appetite. Take less weight in, weigh less. Simple as that.

LVN School and the Deaconess in History

On April 20, 2011, in Health, by laura

Anyone entering into the nursing field will no doubt come across some rather interesting findings. When it comes to the history of nursing in the world, there are many little nooks and crannies to uncover some fascinating things. Although some of the more intriguing parts of nursing’s history are related to dubious medical practices, there are also plenty of ancestors to discover. Theodore Fliedner is not exactly an unsung hero, but he is one who’s name is often eclipsed by a certain famous Florence. But it was he who really formalized the institution that we know as nursing today.

It wouldn’t be hard to trace the origins much further back in history, but his thoughts and practices mark a turning point. Today’s lvn programs all have a certain debt to his ideas, or can be seen as a continuation of his enormous legacy. Curiously enough, the origins of the field do have a certain connection to the idea of faith. This may come as a surprise, but it is one that developed throughout the history of the medical profession in general. The history of the church in Europe reveals that there were connections to nearly every field in some way, and the act of helping people who were sick would seem to logically fall into alignment with some of the basic ideas of charity. These ideas were formalized in his teachings.

Plasma or LCD?

On April 5, 2011, in Electronics, by laura

Early models of LCD TVs had a few problems measuring up to their plasma cousins. This made it more attractive for buyers to shell out the extra dollars to purchase the more expensive plasma television. However, over the years, LCD technology has improved in those areas, virtually eliminating problems with distorted pictures, and blurring of action sequences. The differences between the two have narrowed, making a sony lcd tv just as good as a plasma — and in some cases better.

Plasma TVs still offer close to true black, which LCDs have difficulty producing. They are also slightly better at depicting fast action in games and sports programs. They excel at reproducing near movie quality experiences, with large screens, high resolution of details, but usually only in darker rooms.

On the other side are LCD TVs which have matte screens and are better suited for use in daylight and brightly lit rooms. They are lighter and thinner than plasma TVs and can be found in screen sizes down to a few inches across as well as larger screens. Plasmas are generally limited to 42 inches or larger. Plasmas also tend to be more expensive for the same size screen.

Whether a plasma or LCD TV is the final purchase will depend on the viewing habits , room size, and budget of a given household.

Determining the Age of a Map

On March 26, 2011, in Geography, by laura

Historically interested individuals used a geographical dictionary , also known as a gazetteer, to determine the age of a map. These specialized reference books contain a list of geographical place names together with information about the country, city, or region. The are invaluable repositories of data that can be combined with actual maps in order to truly understand what a given region was like at a specific moment in time.

These dictionaries are arranged alphabetically by the official place name. The information in each entry includes features such as roads, mountains, and waterways. There is also historical information about political borders and changes in the naming of things. Looking at an old map of england and comparing the features depicted to the descriptions in the geographical dictionary could help narrow down the time at which it was made.

As these specialized tomes are increasingly hard to come by, many people who encounter an antique map are forced to consult with cartographers and historians in order to discover the age of maps. This probably won’t be a problem when future generations encounter maps made now. Modern maps usually have a copyright or publication date on them, so someone finding a 2011 World Wall Map fifty years from now will easily know that it represents the world as it looks now.
